When reality has a different script from your films, who wouldn’t invent a country to fool themselves? CINEMA KOMUNISTO takes us on a journey through the crumbling remains of Tito’s film industry to explore the rise and fall of Yugoslavia’s cinematic illusion. With rare footage from dozens of forgotten Yugoslav films and a never-before-seen archive of film sets and Tito’s private films, the documentary tells the story of a country – both on screen and the stories hidden behind it. Stars such as Richard Burton, Sophia Loren and Orson Welles lend the national effort a touch of glamour, appearing in state-funded super-productions. Tito’s personal projectionist, who screened films for him every evening for 30 years, his favourite film director, the famous star of partisan films and the head of the central film studios with secret police connections tell how the history of Yugoslavia was created on screen.

In 1988, hunters come across a wild child, apparently raised by wolves. The boy is taken to a Belgrade orphanage, where Žika, a boy of the same age, manages to win his trust. Only this opens the way for Pucke into the human way of life, which is alien to him. Within four years he goes through the process of civilisation at high speed. His fate takes a new turn when, in 1992, Pucke is classified as Bosnian.

Documentary | Running time: 81 min.
Belgrade filmmaker Mihajlo Jevtić is about to leave his country – exactly 25 years after the break-up of Yugoslavia. With a mix of current footage, old Super 8 material from his childhood and animated sequences, he presents his impressions of growing up in a society that falls apart and is rebuilt, but no longer feels like his own. Torn between his love for his former homeland and deep dissatisfaction with its current incarnation, Mihajlo collects all the thoughts, images and memories he wants to pack into his suitcase as souvenirs. At the same time, he cannot leave. Or can he? A film about migration and identity after the break-up of the former Yugoslavia – the story of four passports and one country, a farewell lasting 25 years.
